Plenty of building owners assume they are stuck with whoever installed their fire alarm system, or that switching monitoring companies means ripping out the panel and starting over. Neither is usually true. Moving your commercial fire alarm monitoring to a new company is a routine process called a takeover, and on the panels we take over (Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Potter, and Honeywell) it happens without new equipment, and we plan the switch so there is no gap in coverage. Here is what actually goes into one.
What a monitoring takeover is
Your fire alarm panel communicates with a central station, a facility that watches for alarm, trouble, and supervisory signals around the clock and dispatches the fire department when something trips. A takeover simply moves that reporting from your current provider's central station to a new one. The panel and devices in your building stay exactly where they are; what changes is who is watching them and who you call.
Bottom line. On a Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Potter, or Honeywell panel, a takeover means reprogramming the panel to report to a new central station. It is not a system replacement, and we plan it so your building stays monitored during the switch.
Do you have to replace the panel?
Not if it is a Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Potter, or Honeywell panel. We reprogram those to report to our central station, so the takeover does not mean new hardware. For any other panel, send us a photo first and we will tell you your options, including a replacement quote. If a replacement makes sense, we will tell you why, in plain terms.
How we plan the switch to avoid a coverage gap
The order of operations is what protects you. We bring the new central station online and confirm it is receiving real signals from your panel before the old monitoring account is closed. That overlap is how we plan to keep your building monitored during the transition.
- We document the existing panel, communicator, and account details.
- We program the panel to report to the new central station and place the account.
- We send a live test signal and confirm it lands and is actioned correctly.
- Only then is the old account cancelled, on your timeline.
A good time to also catch up on inspections
A takeover is a natural moment to get the rest of the system current. Because we are already documenting the panel and devices, we can pick up any overdue testing and inspection at the same time and put you on a tracked schedule going forward, so the same lapse does not happen again.
What we need from you to start
Getting a takeover scoped is quick and usually does not require a site visit. Send us:
- The panel make and model (a photo of the panel is perfect).
- Who currently monitors the system, if you know.
- When your current agreement ends, so we can plan the cutover around it.
From there we confirm your panel is one we take over, quote the takeover, and schedule the switch around your contract so nothing overlaps that you are paying twice for.
Common questions
Do I have to replace my fire alarm panel to switch monitoring companies?
Not if it is a Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Potter, or Honeywell panel. We reprogram those to report to our central station, so the takeover does not mean new equipment. For any other panel, send us a photo and we will tell you your options, including a replacement quote.
Will there be a gap in monitoring during the switch?
We plan the switch to avoid one. We coordinate the cutover so the new central station is receiving signals before the old account is closed.
What do you need from me to start a takeover?
The panel make and model, who currently monitors it, and when your current agreement ends. Photos of the panel and the account details are enough for us to scope the takeover, often without a site visit.

Send your plans, or just photos and a short walkthrough of the space, and we will come back with a proposal. Most jobs can be priced without a site visit.
